My mother was the absolute QUEEN of the stiff arm child restraint method. We'd be driving into town, when all of a sudden my mother would hit the brakes, for a dog, a deer or a little old lady crossing the road. The car would lurch so hard that it would have catapulted little children with normal parents, right out of the backseat, over the front seat and through the window. But those flying children were not in the car with the QUEEN.

THOSE children would never have bloody lips and black eyes from the lightening quick stiff arm of a mother trying to stop a 5000 pound gold and cream two tone 1951 Hudson and backseat standing, ice cream eating twins at the same time. AHHHGGG! She would yell as she slammed on the brakes as she simultaneously stiff armed our chests, slamming us with maximum force to the seat and sometimes to the floor of the moving vehicle. She also said other words that are not really fit to print. It took skill, courage and experience to coordinate this child restraint maneuver. But it worked. We are still here and none the worse for wear.

Modern moms have it easy. To ride in a vehicle. children now are strapped into padded car seats facing forward...no back...now forward...and up. Their little legs dangle numbly as they try in vain to wiggle around for some comfort. Yet, it is the law. It saves lives. Lives of children whose mothers have never had the opportunity to master the QUEEN's stiff arm child restraint method.

All joking aside, the child restraint laws are changing all of the time. Please be aware of the current requirements.  If you are in need a new car seat or have a family member or friend that will, enter to WIN a Britax Car Seat! The winner will receive the Britax Marathon 70 Convertible Car Seat in the color of their choice OR you can choose a $300 Visa Gift Card. Hurry! Enter at Lullaby Lane by April 15th.

Well the title tells it all. Everyone is Irish on St Pat's Day.

I've been doing a little genealogy research lately. Somewhere in my mind I had a feeling there were Irish ancestors in my family tree. If you have not tried to trace your family roots, I highly recommend it.  I had oodles of fun and learned so much about my family.

I thought I would research the most likely "Irish" subject in my tree. His name was William Collins. William was a farmer, born in West Virginia in the 1800's. He had a wife named Emily and several sons. Williams father, Arthur was also a farmer, born in West Virginia and a private in the Civil War. I would have to search further back to find out when the Collins family immigrated to our shores.

I was sure I was on the right track when I found out that the total area of Ireland is  27,135 square miles, which is just about the size of West Virginia. Of course! West Virginia reminded them of home.

Generation after generation slowly formed on my tree, but all born here. After weeks of research I finally found my man! His name was John Collins and he died in West Virginia, but was born in...England?!?

Evidently I had made a rookie mistake. I had taken the word of the living. You see, my mother told me that we had Irish blood in our veins. She even relayed to me the the county in Ireland from whence we came. She learned this from her mother, who had heard it from her mother and so it had been passed from generation to generation, each one thinking it true.

So, while Collins is a solid English name it is definitely NOT Irish.  Common Irish surnames would include Murphy, Kelly, O'Sullivan, O'Neille, O'Connor, Ryan, Byrne, Walsh, and Doyle. I slumped in my chair. Not Irish. No celebrating with beer and song, just picking up after the Queen's Corgi's.

Even though my quest for an Irish ancestor was unlucky and unproductive, it had also been exciting and insightful. As I traveled through time on the backs of my ancestors, I learned a lot about myself and about the strong and brave stock from which I came. I am delighted to be descended from war heroes and pioneers. I look forward to discovering more about each of them. Why did they risk traveling into the unknown? What dreams did they share? Once they arrived in the New World, why did they live in one location for so many generations? Did they know any Irish lasses?

You may not be Irish, but if you are longing for a little luck of the Irish this year - check out the following links.

_ It used to be that clipping coupons was only for the poor. Those who clipped, tried to slip their coupons across the counter to the checker without the next one in line seeing the transaction. Clippers are embarrassed no more.

With food prices soaring and TV shows like extreme couponing making it cool to clip, proud coupon clippers flaunt their pile of coupons and low receipts and smugly smile at those in line paying full price for their goods.

Can you save on your food bill by clipping coupons? Of course. Do you want to spend hours clipping and sorting, reviewing food ads, and climbing in dumpsters to retrieve inserts? Of course not. You have a life. Let’s be real.  Time is money.  It doesn’t make sense, unless you simply have loads and loads of free time, to kill yourself just to save 3 bucks at the grocery store.  There is something to be said for convenience.  From time to time, pay the extra few pennies, get home a few minutes earlier, and enjoy the evening with your family.

But there is a sensible way to coupon that can severely cut your grocery bill with much less time and effort. It’s called Seasonal Stockpiling. Too tired to clip? Don't think it's cool? Think your time is better spent elsewhere? Learn how seasonal stockpiling can save you money without all of the hassle in the book, "Gifted Granny's Secrets to Eating Well, While Spending Less" on Amazon.

"A recent study by the Food and Agriculture Organization reported that ⅓ of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted. Perfectly good food.  Think about it. Think about how much fuel is wasted in planting and preparing soil, weeding, harvesting, trucking, and packaging. Think about what would happen if we only bought local products, in season or even better if we became self sufficient.

If you are living in an apartment in Los Angeles, I can hear you now - I have no way to become self sufficient here.
But, listen,  there are things you CAN do to reduce your food bill. Things that are fun. Things that are easy. Things that will have you eating well and spending less. Things that can make a difference to you, to your community, and to the world."

Finally! The first book in the Gifted Granny's Series of Living Well, Spending Less, and Enjoying Life is now on AMAZON!

“You need to write a book." my friends told me.
"About what?" I said. "I don't do anything special."
"That's true." They said. "You do everything special - travel, food, home - on very little money."
"It's just stuff I learned from my family," I said.
"Not everyone HAD your family - what is second nature to you, is totally foreign to most." They argued.

I guess I needed to hear that. I did grow up learning how to live well on less.  We were a family that hunted, fished, foraged, and gathered. We shopped the bargains, but I was the best dressed kid in school, not the worst.  I learned how to budget the easy way and how to stretch those dollars in so many ways. We were a happy family that enjoyed being together. Maybe I did have "special" knowledge to pass on.

So many families are struggling with money these days. Young people who have grown up in the "land of plenty" are finding it hard to live in the "land of less" and when the money decreases they jump on the depression truck. On the depression truck, they cut food costs by eating cheap boxed packaged foods, their weight goes up, their health goes down. They rack up credit card debt to keep their "land of plenty" lifestyle and then stress out when the bill comes due.  They just don't enjoy life anymore. Could I help?

When I started writing Gifted Granny's Secrets it was only going to be one book, but I found that there was so much to share that I should break it into categories - that meant more than one book. So, the first book is on food.

Would you like to cut your food bill in half, or more? Just using a few of the tips in this book will enable you to eat better, fresher, and more nutritious food. You won't have to spend hours clipping coupons. You can enjoy family time together. You can help your community.

If you’re looking for complicated advice, you won’t find it here. This book’s message boils down to a simple tasks that anyone can do. Pick one thing. Add another. Use the worksheets and the free links. Soon you will find your food budget decreasing and your life becoming healthier, happier and less stressful.

And start looking for the rest of the books in this series. I'm busy researching right now.
